LJMU technology selected for electric vehicle project

The University’s Electrical Machines and Drives group led by Professor Emil Levi has won a share of major Research Council funded project to develop electrical vehicle (EV) technology. The project will take the best science technology from ten UK universities and, with industrial partners, build a number of vehicles to show case it.

A major issue in bringing electric cars to the mass market is cost and power output of the electrical power train is much higher than that of a conventional petrol or diesel engine. Professor Levi’s group has developed technology for a key part of the power train which controls the speed and power output of the motor.

The Electric Machines and Drives Group is part of the Electrical Electronic Engineering Research Centre based in the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations.

Shanghai Graduation

Liverpool John Moores University held its first graduation ceremony for students at the Sino-British College (SBC) in Shanghai earlier this summer. SBC is an international university college, jointly established by the University of Shanghai for Science & Technology (USST), and nine leading British Universities from NCUK. Liverpool John Moores University was the first to offer full degrees at SBC and the 2011 graduating students on the LJMU programmes are the very first graduates in Shanghai to be awarded Engineering Honours degrees taught entirely in English.

Shanghai is a major centre for the automotive industry in China and the degree programmes (BEng Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and BEng Industrial Electronics and Control) which originally designed for the UK automotive industry, were selected in part to support this major industrial sector. Over the last two years academic staff from the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations delivered the key elements of the programmes in Shanghai, supported by the academic staff from SBC. Those present at the ceremony commented on the quality of the graduates. The ceremony was attended by Steve Kenny on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dian Meehan Dean of Faculty of Technology and Environment and Professor Ian Jenkinson Director, School of Engineering Technology and Maritime Operations.
